书很厚，小型砖头，不是能够拿着通勤的。适合在清明假期这样看起来还有充分的休息时间的时候阅读。作者史景迁，这个名字就是图书质量的担保。当然，也注定了带有历史的厚重，并不是会让你轻松的文字。

过了35岁的门槛，从这本书中我看到了更多的共情。书中有一些对于历史中一些细节的描述，仿佛身临其境，让我感受到了当时历史条件的局限，以及每一个个体的人，在历史或时间的长河中，是多么的微不足道；而历史中又充满了那么多的偶然性，许多重大的划时代的意义，只能是在百年之后的人们通过某种主观的自信反向推演猜出。

深夜翻过本书，耳边总是响起上海彩虹室内合唱团的《玉门关》合唱。一片古城万仞，山十人戍边三人还。即便是最繁华的时刻，每个个体的人都可能是艰难的。
